Bramayugam movie review

 Bramayugam movie review:

Watched Bramayugam on OTT with subtitles. Pretty good acting, engaging enough storyline, but falters at the end. A pretty good watch for those interested in this genre (mystery/thriller/horror). I can understand why some would call it a masterpiece, but I personally wouldn't since I found more shortcomings than they did.  7.25 to 7.5/10 IMO.

Details (no spoilers):

Quick intro to a couple of things:

in Kerala folkfore, from what I understood

Chathan -> A powerful, lusty and mischevious being. translated as goblin in the movie subtitles, but not quite the same thing.

Yakshi -> A seductive, tricky, female spirit/being.

Positives:

1. Great acting by Mammootty as Kodumon Patti and Arjun Ashokan as Thevan. good to pretty good from Siddharth as the cook (his could have been better if there was a little better character sketch I think).

2. Movie in black and white makes it intriguing.

3. It keeps you engaged for most part with an interesting tale.

4. The concepts of Chatan, Yakshi taken from old Kerala folklore.

5. Shows well how power in wrong hands or more power than what one can handle can corrupt

6. A slow moving thriller/mystery/horror movie is a first for me. A unique experience.

Negatives or shortcomings:

1. Climax is tuss phataki aka damp squib after all the build up and reveal. Expected more of the reveal of powers of the Chathan in some part of the movie.

2. Couple of concepts of Hinduism not done well. Goddess Varahi granting Chathan to Kodumon Potti's ancestor, what the Koduman Patti says afterwards about God and all ...doesn't add up. The title Bramayugam doesn't work and isn't apt. Given the focus area is so limited and nothing particular that Kaliyuga hasn't seen. Yes, I know there are lies, manipulations etc. I know. Still doesn't add up fully for me.

3. Tightness lacking in a couple of places: lacking of conclusion for Yakshi, sudden convenient intro of Portugese, lacking in protection for that crucial thing especially for someone devilish/manipulative (those who have seen will know).

4. The character sketch of the cook played by Siddharth should have been better. Without spoilers can't go more into detail.
