Gangubai Kathiawadi

Only saw Gangubai Kathiawadi as I wanted to see Alia's performance in it.

Overall: Alia's performance merely good. Definitely not national award winning worthy, not even close. Poor film, would not recommend to watch. 4/10.

Note that I am sympathetic to the plight of sex workers and possible arguments for legalization, but I am not for glorification or moralization of it.

Details: 

  • Alia was good to very good in some aspects, misfit  in couple of aspects. Starts off well,but performance is a little inconsistent. Doesn't look street toughened. Looks too young. Overall nothing more than good. National Award winning? LOL, not even remotely close.
  • The film glamourizes prostitution, subtly in some ways, overtly in others. Still somewhat bearable till the speech at the end. The speech glorifying prostitution is just beyond shameless and shit. With no one responding back and in fact people shown cheering, it becomes worse.
  • The film glorifies Don (played by Ajay Devgan) as moral
  • The only +ve issues wise is it brings up issues faced by sex workers and argument of legalization. But it doesn't explore the legalization argument in well. Doesn't much about sex work being illegal forces it to go underground making it more dangerous for sex workers, others as well as the society.
  • Plot is interesting at times, but isn't tight at others. Multiple illogical things. Doesn't call parents for years or even think of doing so. Direct meeting with PM office, not even district or CM level? yeah, right (rolls eye).
  • Ajay Devgan plays his role well enough. Vijay Raaz role is unconvincing/misfit for the role. Support cast has done good enough job.

  Using rope to square a circle What is squaring a circle? It is drawing a square equal to the area of a given circle. Area of a circle = Pi*r^2 where r is the radius of the circle Area of square = s^2 where s is the side of the square Therefore Pi*r^2=s^2 implies s= r*sqrt(Pi) But Pi is a transcadental number. Therefore its square root cannot be computed exactly This squaring of a circle using a compass and straight edge is considered impossible. Hence squaring a circle is used by many as a metaphor for doing the impossible. However it can be easily done via a rope as explained the Sulbasutras.
