Chup movie review

Chup

Watched the movie Chup on OTT.

A movie based on an innovative concept - film about film critics. Someone is killing some film critics. But why? Film stars Dulquer Salmaan, Sunny Deol and Shreya Dhanwanthary. Good to very good plot and very good acting.

I'd say 8/10. With a better 2nd half or last 1/3rd could have been a masterpiece.

The positives:

  • Innovative concept - film about film critics.
  • Great acting from Dulquer -- very convincing in various shades
  • Very good acting from Shreya, Sunny Deol
  • Support cast/villain is pretty good
  • nice chemistry between Dulquer and Shreya
  • BGM is very good
  • Plot very good for like 2/3rd of the movie

The negatives or meh parts:

  • Plot very good in first half, but goes down to an extent in the 2nd half. Still decent to good in 2nd half, but if last 1/3rd was better, could have been an absolute masterpiece.
  • Mongolian film copy? Who watches Mongolian films? Was that film famous? I mean could have used some other better known industry?
  • Some help from psychologist played by Pooja Bhatt ok, but IMO it becomes over-dependency and lessens Sunny's role as investigating officer.

Spoilers below:

  • Did not understand what Nila was trying to tell by saying/questioning if even Danny put 1 star for Chup? Was she just questioning his point that everyone gave the same rating of 1 star for Chup?
  • Does Danny have to take the risk of abducting Nila to kill her? Could have waited couple of days for police to clear? Convenience plot for film I guess. or is just that Danny is too obsessed to care about the risk?
  • A missed chance to go a little more in-depth into sold out critics.
  • Yes, I know the real name is Sebastian Gomez, but using Danny for convenience
  • Dulquer was just brilliant in the role with various shades - as the flower guy, as the guy talking to himself, as the lover guy, as the film watcher, film critic, as the film maker, as the serial killer.

An alternate last 1/3rd:

Nila is a little less afraid once she realizes its Danny. An actual showdown of words between Danny and Nila.

Nila replies back to him saying you expect me to have watched a Mongolian film that is not even famous. Are you an actual film critic or just crazy with bitterness?

The internal conflict shown for both:

Nila with the feelings of love for Danny and the fear that he is the serial killer.

Danny wondering if he has become too obsessed/bitter and has crossed too many lines.

IG Arvind (Sunny) shoots Danny, but not fatally.

Danny is sentenced to life imprisonment. Realizes he has gone too far and repents.

The movie Chup gets re-released and gets its due.
