C/O Kancharpalem movie review

C/O Kancharpalem

Watched C/O Kancharapalem after seeing the rave reviews and IMDB rankings.

Summary

Beyond disappointed. Movie is at best a one time watch for me and that on OTT.

I'd say 5.5 to 6 out of 10. 2 of the 4 stories are good enough, but the other 2 have serious problems.

Just because something is unconventional doesn't mean its good or has to be praised.

Its a mediocre film to say the least.

And I give it the award of THE most over-rated movie among Telugu film critics/on IMDB.

Details:

The plus points:

1. The love story of Raju and Radha is good. A mature, if unconventional one.

2. The love story of the kids Sundaram and Sunitha is decent.

3. Showcases some aspect of village life accurately.

4. Acting is decent to good.

The minus points

If we take this to be a drama film and not very realistic:

1. Music and songs are meh, bland except for at 1 or 2 places

2. None of the actors have good enough screen presence

3. Drama isn't good

4. Didn't particularly love the characters or connect that well with them.

Taking this to be a realistic film (Warning: Spoilers after point 4)

1. Film shows unnecesary things at times going slow and at other times goes too fast, leaving viewers to interpret anyhow they want and not making it clear. You will see examples below.

2. Gaddam says he fell in love with Saleema because of her eyes which he had been observing for like a year (she used to have her face except eyes covered). But doesn't recognize her eyes when he visits the brothel. I mean the first part is a bit extreme since he hasn't even seen her face nor does he know much about her. But even taking that at face value, the 2nd part doesn't compute. You can argue he wasn't expecting her to be a prostitute, but then when you say you loved her because of her eyes, that doesn't work.

3. Firstly Bhargavi gets Joseph beaten up for thinking him and others were following her unnecessarily. Then he helps her once by beating up people again, they have food party together and love story starts? Really? He isn't working at this stage. That's not convincing.

4. Bhargavi straight up says herself that she has to anyway convert to Christianity after (future) marriage to Joseph? What? Joseph doesn't even say anything and yet she says this. Really?

5. How does the same guy go from being Sundaram to Joseph to Gaddam to Raju? I mean the religion of Joseph is an important part in why Bhargavi's father refuses to let her marry him. Just to bring about some feel good in the climax, kuch bhi? Lets assume he changes his name/religion per circumstances, but this isn't made very clear in the film.

6. Instead of trying to explain and persuade Bhargavi or maybe even threatening to disown her, Bhargavi's father straight up goes to threat of hanging himself? WTF. Then finds a suitable groom for her immediately and gets her married immediately? What?

7. Saleema pushes that bhai once, others hit her. Then she is found dead the next day. What? Its never revealed what exactly happened. Suicide doesn't make sense. She is confident/headstrong enough. Murder is also extreme instead of trying to threaten her or expelling her from the community or village.

8. Sundaram's father commits suicide after the idol is damaged and he doesn't get the payment? WTF. He still has his skills. His wife and kid love him, live with him and he commits suicide so quickly? WTF? Its not like he struggles emotionally or with money for some time before taking the extreme step

As if him taking up contract without small part of payment upfront wasn't stupid.

Anyone calling this movie as epic, you have the right to your opinion, but I'm just SMH.
